Rattled Reviews

Rattled BookAs an RN and Parent Educator for 30 years, I found Hogan Hilling's new book "Rattled: What He's Thinking When You're Pregnant" to be a refreshing, intriguing book that I would recommend to every pregnant woman I meet! This book fills a huge gap that exists in pregnancy and childbirth books- it's a book that is written for pregnant women that describes what their husband wishes she would understand about how he is responding to their pregnancy. It's pretty much the pregnancy and childbirth version of Men Are From Mars and Women Are From Venus.

Since I work with pregnant and new families with babies under the age of one year, I have witnessed many, many times exactly what Hilling describes, namely the way some women become totally absorbed in their babies and being the best mother and almost completely ignore their husbands. I agree with him that this is sometimes the start of the unraveling of some relationships and marriages. If more women read Rattled before having their baby, hopefully they would consciously try to balance their intense feelings of motherhood with the importance of maintaining and developing their relationship with their spouse. The best thing for a baby is happy, loving parents!

Rattled is an easy read that leaves you contemplating the many key points Hogan addresses in his book. I really liked his statement "A good way to approach parenthood is to view parenting as two people (a mom and a dad) sharing one role and not two people sharing two roles." This book is all about collaborating as a team to parent your new baby.

Thank your for writing such a helpful book!

Rattled is the book every dad wishes they had given their wives during that critical first pregnancy! Better than allowing her to read your mind, since there is a lot of anxiety and confusion there during pregnancy for guys, this book can really help moms understand the perspective of dads during the transition to parenthood. Chock-full of direct advice and discussion points, Rattled and the companion for dads Pacifi(her) can really help new parents develop empathy and perspective for what the other parent is going through. If you are looking for a gift that can make a difference for an expecting couple in your life, Hilling's books are a great idea. A great addition the library of any organization that works with expecting couples too!

Pacifi(her) Reviews

Pacifi(her) bookAs a nurse and parent educator, I found it enlightening to read about what expectant dads are concerned about.

This is not your typical "how to" book for dads. Besides the obvious financial concerns everyone expects a new dad to have, Hogan Hilling exposes the other deep concerns expectant dads have shared with him in his years of facilitating dad groups including concerns over losing their wife or baby during delivery, loss of friendships since the new dad is not as available to hang out as before and concerns about what kind of dad they may become, to name just a few.

Clearly there isn't much support for dads in this country compared to what there is for moms, and this book helps highlight this need and help all of us be more sensitive to what expectant dads experience. Highly recommended!

Pacifi(her) provides a concise, direct, no holds barred approach to getting new dads ready for parenthood. Each chapter hits the classic guideposts with a freshness and sense of purpose. Along with the companion piece for the ladies, titled Rattled, this book can couples start to talk about the tough topics - like miscarriage, sex, and what life may be like with a baby who doesn't fit society's definition of normal - that each parent often thinks about during pregnancy but seldom do couples actually talk about them. Giving an expecting couple this set of books early in the pregnancy will leave a far longer-lasting impression than yet another set of spit-up towels! I'm going to be sure my Boot Camp for New Dad's classes and my practice office have a copy of these books for guys to check out!

Ronnie K.A. Vesperas (Dad, Nebraska)

Mr. Hilling's book contains insightful information on a multitude of issues that can help expectant dads, pregnant moms, and couples with their relationships. He tackles sensitive subjects such as the possibility of troubled pregnancies, finances that may run askew, and how men and women feel about sex. He also writes about significant matters that should be given considerable thought, such as a male making peace with himself about his father to become a better dad himself or learning more about his wife's father to get a better understanding of the woman he is committed to - stuff that can greatly improve one's life in general. The chapters, though plentiful, are short and to the point making for a quick read, which is very helpful for the husband who is walking to the hospital for his pregnant wife's first visit and needs to find the page on how to deal with the hospital staff.
